A LANDSCAPE FOR NEW NARRATIVES

How do we recognize revolutionary moments when they occur? What defines the event of revolt and revolution in the cultural, social and political sphere? Where are today, in a global scale, the new forms of relationship between performance and political movements? How do bodies create revolutionary alliances? What is the place of fiction and of radical imagination in there? And what the one of representation?

Revolving around these questions, The May Events articulates a platform for art and discourse –a series of events– gathering artists and researchers whose work is situated in or between the contemporary performative scene and the elaboration of political discourse, both within artistic institutions and the social domain. The program emerges from a research in the international artistic field and focuses on voices speaking from different world regions. Next to artistic practices deeply rooted in specific social contexts, it looks, nomadic and displaced artists, whose biography is built in different continents, and whose expression refers to more than one cultural and political contexts –or to none in particular.

Conceived on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of May 1968, The May Events doesn’t aim at celebrating it or at discussing its accomplishments and failures and its European legacy. It is rather a way to use this anniversary as a trampoline to investigate where and how art is today a place for social choreographies to be shaped and performed, for bodies and subjectivities to gather and generate new movements, and for us all to sense the potentialities for revolt and revolution in and through the arts.

Silvia Bottiroli is a curator and researcher in contemporary performing arts. She is interested in particular, in the dynamics of collaboration and collective creation, in the political and ethical values of performance, in the societal implication of artistic creation and theatrical spectatorship and in imaginal and instituent practices. From 2012 to 2016 she has been the artistic director of Santarcangelo Festival, one of the most relevant contemporary performing arts festivals in Italy.
